The transportation department Nexus announced on June 18 that CAF, Hitachi Railroad and Stadler had signed a contract to design, supply and maintain a replacement fleet for 42 EMUs for the Tyneville Metro.
The best and final offer will be submitted this summer, the winner will be announced in January 2020 and the vehicle will be delivered by the end of 2021.
Tobyn Hughes, general manager of Nexus, said, “Every company has a good track record of building trains for the global rail system.” “We have carefully evaluated these bids and will now begin the final phase of the process to improve the bid.”
The joint venture between Bombardier Transportation and Downer EDI Railways and CRRC Changchun has also been prequalified last year but has not yet been shortlisted.
Nexus said it is looking for bright, modern air-conditioned trains that are both efficient and robust, providing "staged changes" in availability and performance, and improving passenger flow and dwell time.
Nexus received a £337 million government grant for the £362 million cost of the £15,000 DC train and the construction of a warehouse on Gosforth's existing site. The supplier will also receive a 35-year contract to maintain the fleet and maintain the existing fleet during the transition period.
CAF UK Director Richard Ghana said in response to the shortlist announcement, "We believe that our subway train will bring significant changes in service performance to passengers on the Tyne and Wear subway."
Ross Nagle, chief operating officer of Hitachi Rail, said that as a Northeast train manufacturer, we are pleased to be able to enter the final list of bidders. We want to be part of this major infrastructure project that will promote the regional economy and improve thousands of trips a day. Since 2015, we have invested £100 million in the state-of-the-art facility in County Durham and have supported hundreds of jobs in the local supply chain to become a member of the region.
