      Promulgator :LX      Time:2019-06-13

Transport for London has selected CAF as the winner of a contract to supply a fleet of 43 five-car driverless light metro trains for the Docklands Light Railway. The first of the new trains are expected to enter service from 2023.

The order announced on June 12 includes 33 trainsets to replace the DLR’s oldest rolling stock, which is nearly 30 years old, and 10 sets to enable an increase in frequency and capacity across the network.

The contract is to include a fleet support agreement covering technical support services and the supply of spare parts.

The 750 V DC third-rail fixed-formation trainsets will feature audio and visual real-time travel information, air-conditioning, mobile device charging points, dedicated wheelchair spaces and multi-use areas to accomodate pushchairs, bicycles and luggage.

In May 2017 TfL subsidiary Docklands Light Railway Ltd invited expressions of interest in a contract to supply and support 43 trainsets with options for up to 34 more. Alstom Transport, Bombardier Transportation, CAF and a consortium of Siemens and Stadler subsquently prequalified to bid.

‘We are delighted to be awarded such a significant contract by Transport for London to supply trains for the UK’s busiest light railway’, said CAF’s UK Director Richard Garner when the winner was announced. ‘CAF’s metro vehicle design is ideally placed to meet the specific demands of this unique operation, not only increasing passenger capacity, but delivering the very latest in comfort, convenience and safety for passengers.’
